MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens signed veteran centre Jeff Halpern to a US$600,000, one-year contract on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old joins his fifth NHL team.

He split last season between Tampa Bay and Los Angeles, registering 19 points (9-10) in 71 games.

In 720 career games with Washington, Dallas, Tampa and L.A., he has 131 goals and 316 points.
