Roy turns down offer to coach Avs
QUEBEC — Patrick Roy has turned down an offer to become the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Hall of Fame goaltender said he phoned Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix late Tuesday night to tell him he wasn’t accepting the team’s offer due to family reasons.

“All I can say is that the Avalanche’s offer was more than interesting,” Roy told a news conference Wednesday inside Quebec City’s Colisee.

Habs put the hammer down in T.O.

Habs put the hammer down in T.O.
TORONTO — The Montreal Canadiens sure know how to atone for a painful loss.

Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves and Alex Kovalev had a goal and three assists Saturday as the Canadiens hammered the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2.

It was just two weeks ago that Toronto embarrassed the Habs by beating them 5-2 at the Bell Centre. Montreal has gone 5-0-1 since and is now five points clear of ninth-place Florida with four games to play in the Continue reading ‘Habs put the hammer down in T.O.’

Pogge received his third career NHL start Wednesday night, losing to the Buffalo Sabres 5-0. The Leafs were out shot 32-16, and head coach Ron Wilson said Pogge played better than the result indicated.

Lundqvist, Rangers shut down Pens

Lundqvist, Rangers shut down Pens
NEW YORK — The number on Henrik Lundqvist’s stat line that jumped out to the New York Rangers goalie wasn’t the 19 in the win column but the zero under shutouts.

Never did the numbers 20 and 1 go as well together as they did Monday night.

Lundqvist bounced back from a slump and a bout with a stomach bug, sending the Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins that stopped a slide and lifted New York back Continue reading ‘Lundqvist, Rangers shut down Pens’

VANCOUVER — The jersey was different and his teammates were new, but what mattered most for Mats Sundin Tuesday was the old feeling he got when he stepped on the ice again.

NEWARK, N.J. — Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins got the best of the New Jersey Devils in a game that felt more like a playoff contest than a regular-season matchup.

And it was a game that lived up to its billing, a showdown between the two hottest teams in the Eastern Conference.

Thomas made 25 saves and Milan Lucic broke a scoreless tie early in the third period Continue reading ‘Bruins down Devils, win 6th straight’

Ovechkin rallies Caps from 4-0 down

Player embedded into articles on Sportsnet
NEW YORK — Through a brutal first period, nothing suggested this would be the night Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals would break out on Broadway.

The New York Rangers had a big lead, had already chased one goalie and then watched another ailing one head to the bench. Ovechkin had never enjoyed success at Madison Square Garden, and Washington hadn’t won there in nearly Continue reading ‘Ovechkin rallies Caps from 4-0 down’

Bolts look to strike down Melrose
The Tampa Bay Lightning ownership group is contemplating filing a charge with the league claiming Barry Melrose breached his contract when he spoke out Tuesday against his former team.

In a radio interview on the FAN590, Melrose went on a tirade against his former employers, Continue reading ‘Bolts look to strike down Melrose’

NEW YORK — Ales Hemsky scored the only goal in the shootout and undefeated rookie goalie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers made 40 saves for the Edmonton Oilers, who ended their longest road trip of the season with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

Hemsky’s shot in the second round was blocked by Henrik Lundqvist’s arm, but not enough to keep it out of the net. The Oilers won for the second straight night and finished Continue reading ‘Oilers rookie tender shuts down Rangers’
