UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with goalie Martin Biron on a one-year deal.

Biron was 29-19-5 for the Flyers last season, with a 2.76 goals-against average, and led Philadelphia to the Eastern Conference quarter-finals.

Isles fans get first look at Tavares

Player embedded into articles on Sportsnet
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — John Tavares’ confident stride, friendly wave, broad smile and polished words didn’t give away nervousness that had to be running through him on his first real day as the face of the New York Islanders.

Not even two weeks after the 18-year-old centre from Ontario lived a dream by going No. 1 in the NHL draft, Tavares dealt with the reality that he’s joining a team Continue reading ‘Isles fans get first look at Tavares’

Draft puts Isles on rebuilding path
MONTREAL — If all goes as planned, the New York Islanders will ride first-overall draft pick John Tavares to the top just as the Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins did with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin after their lean years.

The Islanders used the 2009 draft held Friday and Saturday at the Bell Centre to begin the long climb back to being an NHL contender after finishing last overall in the 30-team league this season.

The Islanders finished 30th overall this season and had the best odds of landing the No. 1 pick. That’s exactly what happened when the balls were drawn at NHL headquarters, giving the Isles the top Continue reading ‘Isles win No. 1 pick in draft lottery’

Biron continues domination of Isles
PHILADELPHIA — Martin Biron had plenty of incentive against the New York Islanders.

Biron stopped 38 shots and won his first game in more than a month as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Islanders 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.

“I wasn’t happy with the way I was playing the last two, three weeks, maybe a month or longer,” Biron said after extending his winning streak against New York to 10 games — the longest streak by a Continue reading ‘Biron continues domination of Isles’

Isles provide cure for slumping Leafs
TORONTO — Jason Blake scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and set up two others, including Jeremy Williams’ insurance marker in the third, as the Toronto Maple Leafs ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory Monday over the New York Islanders.

Isles keeping Bailey for season
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Josh Bailey, the No. 9 pick in this year’s NHL draft, will remain with the New York Islanders for the entire season instead of returning to his junior team.

A decision had to be made before the Islanders faced the Ottawa Senators at home on Saturday night.

Once a junior eligible player appears in nine games, he must go back to that club until the conclusion of his team’s season, or he can remain Continue reading ‘Isles keeping Bailey for season’
