PITTSBURGH — Jordan Staal won’t be on the ice when the Pittsburgh Penguins open training camp later this month.

The 21-year-old centre is still recovering from the lacerated tendon in his right foot that he suffered during the playoffs. The team announced Thursday that an infection recently delayed Staal’s recovery.

Veteran forward Paul Kariya will miss the next NHL season after being diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome.

Kariya announced the decision through a release from his agent Friday.

The 35 year old is a free agent after spending the last three seasons with St. Louis.

Kariya scored 18 goals and added 25 assists with the Blues last season.
