Ovechkin feeling better, but sits vs. Devils

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

As expected, Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is out of the lineup because of an upper-body strain.

Ovechkin has been termed “week to week” by the Capitals, but the two-time NHL MVP was not ruled out beyond Wednesday night’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

Ovechkin travelled with the team and could potentially play at Florida on Friday or at home in a rematch with the Panthers on Saturday.

Ovechkin not sorry for celebration

Ovechkin not sorry for celebration
TORONTO — Washington Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin is making no apologies for the celebration that followed his 50th goal last week.

The Russian star followed through with a plan to put his stick on the ice and pretend to warm his hands over it. It sparked a debate on how far celebrations should go in the sport.

“If you win the lottery — a million dollars — you go to the bar and drink a lot,” Ovechkin said Tuesday before Continue reading ‘Ovechkin not sorry for celebration’

PHILADELPHIA — Alex Ovechkin stood alone on the ice in front of the Philadelphia net waiting for the puck.

Great positioning for the reigning MVP, big mistake for Philadelphia.

Rattled Ovechkin granted off-day

Rattled Ovechkin granted off-day
ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin was given Wednesday off, an excused absence from practice that Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said had nothing to do with the “stinger” the league’s reigning MVP got from a shoulder-first crash into the boards.

“He’s fine,” Boudreau said. “I wanted to give him today off to rest. He’s probably a little stiff, I would think, but I mean, he’s fine. And I asked him how his shoulder was. He says Continue reading ‘Rattled Ovechkin granted off-day’

Ovechkin, Laich lift Caps over Leafs

Ovechkin, Laich lift Caps over Leafs
WASHINGTON — Brooks Laich quickly forgave Alex Ovechkin for not passing the puck as Washington Capitals teammates approached an empty net in the final minute of a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night.

After all, Laich was satisfied to have scored twice already.

And he was pleased that the Capitals wrapped up yet another victory, one that moved them into second place in the Eastern Conference, Continue reading ‘Ovechkin, Laich lift Caps over Leafs’

Ovechkin rallies Caps from 4-0 down

NEW YORK — Through a brutal first period, nothing suggested this would be the night Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals would break out on Broadway.

The New York Rangers had a big lead, had already chased one goalie and then watched another ailing one head to the bench. Ovechkin had never enjoyed success at Madison Square Garden, and Washington hadn’t won there in nearly Continue reading ‘Ovechkin rallies Caps from 4-0 down’

Ovechkin in Russia for family matters
ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin will miss at least one game while in Russia to spend time with his ailing grandfather.
