MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens aren’t even officially for sale yet but speculation is already swirling over who would buy one of the economic crown jewels of the National Hockey League.

Could it be Rene Angelil, the mastermind behind pop megastar Celine Dion? What about the Cirque du soleil? Or even the Quebec’s pension-fund manager, the Caisse de depot et placement?

The Saturday night skills competition at the NHL all-star weekend is meant to showcase the game’s best players, but for goaltenders it can be an injury waiting to happen.

Last year the Islanders’ Rick DiPietro tweaked his hip during the skills competition, which began a cycle of injuries for the 27-year-old netminder. The DiPietro injury was enough precedent for the Vancouver Canucks Continue reading ‘Goalies gun-shy over skills comp.’

PHILADELPHIA — Sidney Crosby promised he’d try and lead slumping Pittsburgh with words as much by his actions. Usually, though, the way Sid the Kid delivers with the puck helps the Penguins more than a pep talk.

Against another sellout crowd in Philadelphia that bellowed nothing but derogatory words toward the Pittsburgh captain, Crosby and the Penguins showed a flicker of hope Continue reading ‘Malkin nets pair in win over Flyers’

Habs win chippy affair over Phoenix

Habs win chippy affair over Phoenix
MONTREAL — A nasty hit on Andrei Kostitsyn opened the door for Georges Laraque to show why the Montreal Canadiens went looking for an enforcer last summer.

Laraque was front and centre in a rough and chippy second period as the Canadiens downed the Phoenix Coyotes 4-1 on two goals from Alex Tanguay and a goal and two assists from Saku Koivu on Saturday night, although they look to have lost their gifted left winger Kostitsyn Continue reading ‘Habs win chippy affair over Phoenix’
