Pens following in Oilers footsteps?

Pens following in Oilers footsteps?
PITTSBURGH — Gretzky, Crosby. Messier, Malkin. Oilers, Penguins?

The 1983 Edmonton Oilers, led by the youthful Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, were widely hailed as hockey’s team of the future. Cast against the three-time defending champion New York Islanders in the Stanley Cup finals, they looked inexperienced and overmatched in the first two games and wound up being swept.

A year later, a transition from old to new took Continue reading ‘Pens following in Oilers footsteps?’

Pens commit long-term to Bylsma

Pens commit long-term to Bylsma
PITTSBURGH — When Dan Bylsma took over as interim coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in mid-February, they were barely over .500 and nearly out of the playoff race.

One remarkable turnaround later, Bylsma earned himself a new contract and the right to drop “interim” from his job title.

The Penguins officially named Bylsma their head coach after his arrival sparked Pittsburgh to an impressive 18-3-4 record over their last 25 Continue reading ‘Pens commit long-term to Bylsma’

Kunitz scores pair as Pens top Bs
PITTSBURGH — Chris Kunitz lost a goal and a hat trick he insists he didn’t deserve. The two points? Kunitz and captain Sidney Crosby believe the Pittsburgh Penguins very much earned both of those.

Crosby-less Pens shutout Islanders

Player embedded into articles on Sportsnet
PITTSBURGH — No goals for 57 minutes-plus against the NHL’s worst team. Not much jump, either. No, the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t miss Sidney Crosby.

At least not enough to lose to the New York Islanders, who were even more dismal offensively than they were — and, in this one-goal-was-enough game, that was difficult.

Petr Sykora scored with 2:28 remaining and the Crosby-less Continue reading ‘Crosby-less Pens shutout Islanders’

Therrien: Pens will make playoffs

Pens will make playoffs
PITTSBURGH — Michel Therrien says he saw improvement in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ play of late and didn’t expect to be fired as head coach.

Therrien was dismissed Sunday night, after his team fell apart during a Saturday night loss to Toronto. General manager Ray Shero replaced him with minor-league coach Dan Bylsma.

“We had been playing better the past three weeks, I thought,” Therrien said Monday. “I was really encouraged Continue reading ‘Therrien: Pens will make playoffs’
