Rangers close to agreement with d-man Staal Marc Staal had career highs in goals and points last season.

The New York Rangers and defenceman Marc Staal are said to be close to reaching an agreement, that would keep the Thunder Bay, Ont. native on Broadway.

Staal, 23, was the Rangers first pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft, chosen 12th overall.

He scored career highs in goals, eight, and points, 27, in 82 games last season.

Sportsnet has learned the Dallas Stars will place Sean Avery on re-entry waivers as early as Monday.

NEW YORK — Rangers defenceman Paul Mara injured his right shoulder Sunday during a third-period fight with Philadelphia’s Arron Asham and stayed home from New York’s trip to St. Louis after the game.

Mara had a brief examination of his shoulder at Madison Square Garden, but swelling prevented a closer look. He was immediately ruled out of Monday’s road game against the Blues and left the arena with his right arm in a sling.
