OTTAWA — The New Jersey Devils found a way Saturday night to extended their unbeaten road record to eight games, even if it wasn’t all that pretty.

Zach Parise and David Clarkson each had a goal and an assist on the power play as the Devils came from behind in the third period to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2.

“It seems we find ways to win,” said Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. “We stuck with it. It Continue reading ‘Weary Devils hang on to edge Senators’

Senators entertain Bolts’ young guns

Senators entertain Bolts young guns

The Ottawa Senators are off to a surprising start, and another meeting with the Tampa Bay Lightning may only help.

Coming off a victory over Florida’s other NHL club, the Senators look to continue their dominance of teams from the Sunshine State on Thursday night when they visit the Lightning.

Last season, the Senators (6-2-2) missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons, and they were hoping to show improvement in 2009-10. Continue reading ‘Senators entertain Bolts’ young guns’

Matt Carkner’s storybook season with the Senators just keeps getting better.

The rugged defenseman, who grew up just outside of Ottawa, signed a two-year contract extension with the NHL club on Tuesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old came into training camp as a longshot to make the team, but his strong play has earned him a permanent spot on the blueline this season and beyond. The new contract Continue reading ‘Senators sign Carkner to two-year extension’

Heatley request surprised Senators
“I’ve said this from day one: I’m a guy who wants to be here. He doesn’t want to be here, so if he doesn’t want to be here, let him go somewhere else,” said Neil, speaking at Jason Spezza’s annual golf tournament.

Neil said he was surprised to learn of Heatley’s request for a trade because of tension with head coach Cory Clouston. Neil said it was his belief that Heatley adapted to the new coaching Continue reading ‘Heatley request surprised Senators’

NY senators oppose Hamilton team
BUFFALO, N.Y. — U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are opposed to the Phoenix Coyotes relocating to southern Ontario because it would have a potential “crippling” effect on the Buffalo Sabres.

In a letter sent to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday, the two Democrats sided with the league in its bid to prevent BlackBerry boss Jim Balsillie from purchasing the bankrupt Coyotes and moving them to Hamilton, Continue reading ‘NY senators oppose Hamilton team’

Neil suffered a laceration to his right calf late in the second period of Saturday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres. He will not make the team’s upcoming road trip, which starts Wednesday in Buffalo.

Neil missed time earlier in the season because of a right knee injury. He sat out six games in December.

Senators fall in five-round shootout

Senators fall in five-round shootout
OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators played one of their better games of the season, but a late penalty ensured they would still find a way to lose.

P.J. Axelsson scored in the fifth round of a shootout and the league-leading Boston Bruins beat the Senators 4-3 Thursday. The Senators are now 1-5 in the winless this season.

The Senators (17-26-7), now facing a four-game losing streak, put together a solid outing but still fell short.

Senators place Gerber on waivers
OTTAWA — Veteran goaltender Martin Gerber was placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

The 34-year-old from Switzerland has until noon Friday to clear waivers, allowing the Sens to send him to Bighamton of the American Hockey League, or perhaps loan him to a European team as has been rumoured.

Gerber is 4-9-1 with an .899 save percentage and 2.86 goals-against average in 14 games this season, the final one of Continue reading ‘Senators place Gerber on waivers’

Spezza, Alfredsson lift Senators

Spezza, Alfredsson lift Senators
ATLANTA — It’s still far too early for Ottawa coach Craig Hartsburg to temper his team’s expectations.

The Senators’ first two-game winning streak in over a month is no reason to celebrate.

“The spirits are good,” Hartsburg said. “The guys are battling. Our guys showed a lot of character.”

Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson each had a goal and an assist, helping Ottawa beat the Thrashers 3-2 to keep Atlanta Continue reading ‘Spezza, Alfredsson lift Senators’
