MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens signed veteran centre Jeff Halpern to a US$600,000, one-year contract on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old joins his fifth NHL team.

He split last season between Tampa Bay and Los Angeles, registering 19 points (9-10) in 71 games.

In 720 career games with Washington, Dallas, Tampa and L.A., he has 131 goals and 316 points.

DETROIT — The Red Wings have agreed to a two-year contract with forward Justin Abdelkader.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland announced the deal Monday. Terms were not disclosed.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks signed forward Bill Sweatt to a contract on Thursday.

Sweatt, 21, led Colorado College in scoring in 2009-10, registering 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) in 39 games. He has recorded 109 points (46-63) in 143 games in his collegiate career.

The six-foot native of Elburn, Ill., won a bronze medal with the United States at the 2007 world junior championships.
