Toronto bids to land NHL all-stars in 12 or 13

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs are bidding for either the 2012 or 2013 NHL all-star festivities.

The club has also applied to host the 2011 NHL Entry Draft at Air Canada Centre as well as the 2012 NHL Winter Classic at BMO Field, home of MLS soccer club Toronto FC.

Toronto last hosted the NHL all-star game in 2000 at Air Canada Centre.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Thrashers traded a former franchise cornerstone for the second time in less than a week on Tuesday night, sending goaltender Kari Lehtonen to the Dallas Stars.

The Thrashers received defenceman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft. Atlanta said Vishnevskiy, 21, is expected to report to AHL Chicago.

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars have sent young defenceman Ivan Vishnevskiy back to the minor leagues.

The 21-year-old Russian was assigned to the Texas Stars of the AHL on Wednesday, two days after he gave a goal to San Jose when he lost control of the puck and it slid into an empty net.

TORONTO — Dallas Stars winger James Neal has been suspended two games for his hit on Columbus’ Derek Dorsett Thursday night.

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars have placed centre Steve Ott on injured reserve with a rib cage muscle injury.

The move Friday came five days after Ott injured an oblique muscle against Vancouver. He has one assist and nine penalty minutes in four games this year.

As was first reported by Sportsnet on Friday, the Dallas Stars will place Sean Avery on re-entry waivers Monday.

Stars co-general manager Les Jackson confirmed the plan Sunday during a TV broadcast, adding a team is poised to pick him up.

NEW YORK — Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien will be behind the Eastern Conference bench and San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan will guide the Western Conference squad at the NHL all-star game in Montreal.

DALLAS — The Stars placed defenceman Sergei Zubov on the injured list and recalled Dan Jancevski from Hamilton of the AHL on Thursday.
