Franzen undergoes surgery; Datsyuk to sit

DETROIT — Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has undergone successful surgery to repair a ligament in his left knee.

The team said Franzen is expected to miss at least four months because of the injury sustained Oct. 8 during Detroit’s 3-2 victory over Chicago, in which he scored the game-winning goal.

Blues Brewer has knee surgery
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Blues defenceman Eric Brewer has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in what the team termed a minor setback for a player rehabbing from two back operations.

Brewer, the team captain, played only 28 games last season before undergoing surgery in December to repair a herniated disc in his back. He had a second back operation in April.

The Colorado Avalanche are contemplating surgery for Ryan Smyth, sources tell Sportsnet, after the veteran forward suffered a fracture in his right hand Wednesday night.

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Lightning defencemen Paul Ranger and Andrej Meszaros are scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery on March 3.

Dr. James Andrews will repair labrum tears both players have in their left shoulder. Recovery time is expected to be within six months.

Habs Lang has successful surgery
MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens say that Robert Lang has had successful surgery to repair the Achilles tendon in his left leg.

Lang suffered the injury on an innocent looking play during a game against Boston on Sunday afternoon, and was operated on later in the evening. The team hasn’t offered a timetable for Lang’s return, saying only that he’s out indefinitely.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Sabres defenceman Teppo Numminen is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery Sunday to repair a fractured bone in his face.

Numminen was struck in the face Saturday by a second-period shot from Carolina defenceman Tom Gleason. The shot appeared to be deflected. Numminen was able to skate off under his own power.
